Multimodal transport

Multimodal Transport

Multimodal freight transportation moves your cargo in one intermodal unit across several modes — rail, ship and truck — under a single contract and a single transport document.

Truck-rail in particular is growing faster than any other mode of transport, and a sizeable amount of containers and trailers now move intermodally throughout Sri Lanka and globally. Multimodal transport is the most widely accepted approach for cargo that has to cross both water and land, both operationally and on cost.

We advocate intermodal transport to our clients chiefly for its dependability, sustainability and cost efficiency — one booking, one document, and one party answerable for the whole journey rather than a chain of handovers where responsibility quietly disappears.

Why shippers choose intermodal

  • One contract covering every leg of the journey
  • One transport document and one point of liability
  • Lower cost per tonne-kilometre on long inland legs
  • Fewer handling points, so less damage and pilferage
  • Lower carbon output than road-only movement
  • Container integrity maintained end to end
  • Predictable schedules on repeat lanes
  • Simplified customs and bonded transit

Single contract

You deal with us for the whole chain instead of stitching carriers together yourself.

Lower footprint

Shifting long legs from road to rail or sea cuts both cost and emissions.

Fewer touches

The cargo stays in the same unit, which is the simplest damage prevention there is.

Planned handovers

Each interchange is scheduled and confirmed, not left to chance at the terminal.

Common questions

Who is liable if something happens mid-journey?

Under a multimodal transport document, the contracting carrier answers for the whole movement. That is exactly why we prefer it for complex routings — you are never left arbitrating between two carriers.

Next step

Tell us what you are moving.

Send the origin, destination, weight and dimensions. You get routing options, a rate and a named person who owns the file.
